A relatively common condition of the foot that can occur in two different situations is sinus tarsi syndrome. The sinus tarsi is a “tunnel” between the talus and calcaneus (heel bone) in the rearfoot. When the foot rolls out, as in an ankle sprain, the contents of this tunnel can get strained as well as the ankle sprain. The sinus tarsi syndrome often gets missed for the main reason that the pain of the ankle sprain. The other condition occurs when the foot rolls inwards too much. This compresses the strictures in the sinus tarsi, causing symptoms. Both conditions are typically treated with foot orthotics and physical therapy.
